Solana token creation comes with a vocabulary problem. SPL, AMM, CPMM, mint authority, freeze authority, Metaplex, Pump.fun, PumpSwap — if you're new, half the words sound interchangeable. They aren't. This page defines each one in plain English with links to deeper guides.
New here? Start with the SPL token creation guide, then come back to this page whenever you hit a term you don't recognize.
- AMM (Automated Market Maker)
- A smart contract that holds two tokens in a pool and lets users swap between them at a price determined by the ratio of reserves. Raydium is the dominant AMM on Solana. Pricing follows the constant-product formula: x·y = k.
- Bonding curve
- A mathematical curve that defines token price as a function of supply. Pump.fun uses bonding curves: as more people buy, the price increases automatically. When the curve completes (~85 SOL of buys), the token graduates to a regular Raydium pool.
- CLMM (Concentrated Liquidity Market Maker)
- An AMM variant where LPs can choose specific price ranges to provide liquidity in. Capital-efficient at narrow ranges, but LPs face higher impermanent loss outside the range. Raydium has both CPMM and CLMM pools.
- CPMM (Constant Product Market Maker)
- The classic AMM design where x·y=k. Liquidity is spread evenly across all prices. Simpler than CLMM but less capital-efficient. Most Raydium memecoin pools are CPMM.
- Decimals
- The smallest indivisible fraction of a token. A token with 6 decimals and 1 token of supply exists on-chain as 1,000,000 units. Memecoins typically use 6 (matches USDC). NFT-like tokens use 0.
- DexScreener
- The most popular Solana DEX analytics dashboard. DexScreener shows token pairs, price charts, holders, and authority status. Required viewing before any memecoin trade.
- Graduation (Pump.fun)
- The moment a Pump.fun token completes its bonding curve and migrates to a Raydium pool with automatic LP burn. Threshold is ~$13K market cap. Pre-graduation tokens are Pump.fun-only; post-graduation they trade like any Solana token.
- IPFS
- InterPlanetary File System — decentralized content-addressed storage. Solana token metadata images are pinned to IPFS so wallets and explorers can fetch them without depending on a centralized server.
- Jupiter
- Solana's leading DEX aggregator. Jupiter routes trades across all major Solana DEXes for best price. Strict-list tokens are vetted; getting on the list improves discovery significantly.
- Lamport
- The smallest indivisible unit of SOL. 1 SOL = 1,000,000,000 lamports. Network fees are denominated in lamports.
- Liquidity pool (LP)
- A smart contract holding two tokens that lets traders swap between them. LP providers deposit both tokens and receive LP tokens representing their share. They earn a cut of trading fees. See LP burn guide.
- LP burn
- Permanently destroying LP tokens by sending them to a burn address. The underlying liquidity stays in the pool forever — no one can withdraw it. The strongest on-chain anti-rug signal. See Alchemii's LP burn tool.
- Memecoin
- A fungible token whose value comes from cultural relevance rather than utility. Standard Solana memecoin config: 1B supply, 6 decimals, all authorities revoked, LP burned. See our meme coin creation guide.
- Metaplex
- The standard for token and NFT metadata on Solana. Metaplex Token Metadata stores name, symbol, image URI, and creator info in a separate on-chain account linked to the SPL mint.
- Mint
- Two meanings: (1) the on-chain account that defines an SPL token (sometimes called "the mint" or "mint account"), or (2) the act of creating new tokens. The wallet allowed to do (2) holds mint authority.
- Mint address
- The unique on-chain address that identifies a Solana SPL token. Looks like a base58 string (e.g.,
DezXAZ...pPB263for BONK). Required to look up the token on Solscan, DexScreener, etc. - Phantom
- The most popular Solana wallet. Phantom supports browser extension and mobile, with embedded onboarding for non-crypto-native users. Default choice for memecoin trading on Solana.
- Pump.fun
- A fair-launch Solana memecoin platform with a bonding curve. Pump.fun lets anyone deploy a token for ~0.02 SOL with zero seed liquidity. See Pump.fun vs Raydium.
- PumpSwap
- Pump.fun's automated market maker that hosts pools after token graduation. Some Pump.fun graduations now route to PumpSwap by default instead of Raydium.
- Raydium
- The leading Solana AMM. Raydium supports CPMM and CLMM pools. Most direct memecoin launches create a Raydium CPMM pool with 1% fee tier.
- Rent (Solana)
- A small refundable deposit Solana charges for on-chain account storage. A token mint costs ~0.00146 SOL of rent; metadata account ~0.0144 SOL. The deposit is recovered if the account is closed.
- Revoke (authority)
- Setting an SPL token authority to null, permanently disabling it. Most common for mint and freeze authorities on memecoins. Action is irreversible. See how to revoke mint authority.
- Rug pull
- A scam pattern where a token deployer drains liquidity from a pool, leaving holders with worthless tokens. Mitigated by burning LP and revoking mint authority before launching.
- SOL
- The native cryptocurrency of the Solana blockchain. Used for paying transaction fees, account rent, and as the most common quote token in Solana liquidity pools.
- Solscan
- The leading Solana blockchain explorer. Solscan lets you look up any token, transaction, or wallet, including authority status and holder distribution.
- SPL (Solana Program Library)
- A collection of standard Solana on-chain programs maintained by Solana Labs. Includes the SPL Token Program, which all fungible Solana tokens are built on.
- SPL Token
- A fungible token on Solana, governed by the SPL Token Program. Solana's equivalent of Ethereum's ERC-20. All Solana memecoins, stablecoins, and utility tokens are SPL tokens.
